THE PLOT
The story goes like this: Troy is the captain of the basketball team at East High in Albuquerque, N.M. Things change when the "beautiful and brainy" Gabriella transfers to East. She's an outsider, he's an insider. She's a scholar, he's a jock. Both are stuck with their images until they meet each other. Neither one seems interested in theater, but one day East High decides to put on a high school musical. Troy and Gabriella shed their high school skins and become something new - on and off stage. And everyone in the student body learns some important lessons.
THE CHARACTERS
The cute one: Troy is played by Zac Efron, whose lanky build and Beatle shag hairdo has turned him into this generation's David Cassidy. Efron is hot and in July will appear in the big-budget John Travolta movie "Hairspray."
The beauty: Gabriella is played by Vanessa Anne Hudgens, with long, flowing raven hair, dark eyes and a bewitching smile. Not only that, she's a straight-A student.
The bad girl: Sharpay Evans, played by Ashley Tisdale. She's arrogant, cunning and determined to steal the spotlight from Gabriella. Sharpay and her dopey brother, Ryan, audition for the leads, going up against Troy and Gabriella.
The sidekick: Ryan Evans, played by Lucas Grabeel. Little Ryan happens to be Sharpay's fraternal twin brother. He's not nearly as nasty as his sister and is a bit of a slow poke in and out of class. Ryan enjoys wearing strange hats.
The nerd: Taylor McKessie, played by Monique Coleman. Science is Taylor's passion. She's the queen of the science club and Gabriella's pal. Taylor can't stand sports or jocks, and tries to talk Gabriella out of the musical.
The jock: Chad Danforth, played by Corbin Bleu. Chad is a basketball junkie and Troy's best friend. He can't understand why anyone who can dunk, including Troy, would want to be in a musical.

"What Time Is It?" – the film's 3-minute opening number – was a major production, taking three days to shoot and 200 extras, most of whom where handpicked Utah residents. "In the first movie we had dancing, but it was very basic," Efron says. "I didn't realize how far we could push this thing. This movie has been kicked up a notch for sure."
